Наиболее содержательным источником сведений о папстве этого периода является работа «История римских пап в конце Средних веков» Людвига фон Пастора в 14 томах, впервые опубликованная в Германии в 1880-х годах. Отметим также классическую работу Якоба Буркхардта «Культура итальянского Возрождения Ренессанса», изданную в Швейцарии в 1860 году.
